Make & Listen Along

Make and Listen Along
~ On Thursdays I will post what I have been making and listening to as creations grow.
If so inclined post, on your blog or flickr, about what you have been making (on your own or with little hands by your side) and listening to while you create. It can be new music, flash backs, a song or a whole album... whatever you like. You can be stitching with needle & thread, yarn, paper crafting, painting, cooking... and beyond. Share what you are making and the tunes that are fueling your creativity. Then come back to my Thursday Make & Listen Along post and leave a link in the comments so we can be inspired right along with you! ~

Most of my making time this week has been spent with yarn & needles. I am in love with the yarn I chose from this project. I must admit that the three inches of ribbing on these size one needles is no quick endeavor... which is fine with me. Honesty my goal for these is to finish them by the fall. Lots of time. One of the reason why I was craving to knit, beyond wanting to stretch my knitting skills, is that I need my hands to be busy and I wanted something to work on outside, at the park, etc... while the kiddos were occupied in their own pursuits. So these are knit mostly to the sounds of little voices giggling, singing, and often letting me in on the secrets I must keep from the "opposing army."

Kale chips are a favorite around these parts. These ones made last minute as dinner was coming together were made to the fun and funky sounds of this. The kids are getting older but still love it.

A wee bit of late night sewing (that would be 8:30 late night for me) was done to the sound of Bird Cloud by Annie Proulx. It did not get the best reviews, but I figured I would listen for myself because the topic is interesting to me. Have you read it?

This sewing is along the same lines as the little seed sowing aprons I made for Kindred. With all the knitting going on in outdoor and kid happy places I figured it just may be my duty to totally embarrass my children with a knitting apron... I will let you know if something workable develops!

What have you been making?
What is on your playlist?
Please do share!

  1. Your yarn looks amazing, love it! I have been knitting too, working away on my shalom. And a certain little man is asking for a few knitted animals.

I love your seed sowing aprons, still need to hop over and enter the giveaway. Thanks for the link to the Smithsonian Folkways Children's Collection, it looks pretty great. Definitely checking it out. And kale chips, they are a favourite around here too :)

    1. I already want to go back and get more of that yarn... looking for a sock pattern now!
I knit my little man a chicken just before we left NS. The book Toymaking with Chidren by Freya Jaffke has lots of great knit animal patterns... and so much more out of wood, etc... Great book!
The Smithsonian collection is great. Let me know what you think if you get it!

  2. Knitting is quite addictive isn't it? Your project looks so pretty and it sounds like you are really enjoying the process.

We are big kale lovers here and kale chips are one of my favorite ways to prepare it. I also like kale cooked with red onion, garlic and green beans and eated it with eggs for breakfast.

    1. It is blowing my mind all the connections to the places we have lived. Talking about her fathers French-Canadian heritage, family from the Candian Maritimes, down to tribes in the west... it is pretty wild. Also hitting me is how she felt about moving as a child. Very interesting.

    1. I need to look up old photos like that. I do remember seeing one of a woman in South America, maybe Peru, knitting as she walked, her yarn in a waist bag of somesort, baby slung to her back. I just loved it.
Thanks for sharing along this week... you lost the kids and I in the world of Blondie yesterday!

  6. I've been making but not much listening: http://amyhoodarts.com/2013/03/28/inspired-by-haeckel/

I love the colors of that yarn, Dawn. It must be lovely to watch it knit up. Knitting outside while the kids play...<3. Last summer I was able to bring my knitting to the salt pond side of the beach--less windy, and no big waves, so I felt comfortable nobody's safety was in jeopardy! It was wonderfully relaxing to knit there.

    1. Love your new works Amy! Thanks for sharing along!
Your knitting spot sounds perfect. It reminded me of a lake we used to play at in NS. We always found a nice spot away from the wind to spash around and it was a perfect knitting/crafting spot as well!

  7. Would really like to know more about what you think of Bird Cloud. Have almost bought it a few times, but never felt quite compelled enough to take it to the register.

Today I began recovering some chair cushions while listening to season 1 of Gilmore Girls with my daughter. Have a few pictures on Instagram (http://instagram.com/thissortaoldlife) and our FB page (www.facebook.com/pages/This-sorta-Old-Life/101300486660420).

Felt great to finally start a long-put-off project!

    1. I will let you know about Bird Cloud... so far I am finding the connections to the places I have lived interesting. I think it is the kind of book you would need to identify with to "get."
Girlmore Girls was one of my mom's & mother-in-laws favorite shows. My MIL worked at Warner Bros. and took me on the set one time. So fun!
Using Instagram!! Great start to your project!
      Thanks for sharing along!

    1. Yes! I only have one here who is not super keen on the kale chips so they tend to go pretty fast... even when I make up two sheets of them! So good!
Thanks about the knitting. It is fun... I just finished the first three inches of that ribbing last night. Looking forward to starting the pattern!
