Make & Listen Along

~ On Thursdays I will post what I have been making and listening to as creations grow.
If so inclined post, on your blog or flickr, about what you have been making (on your own or with little hands by your side) and listening to while you create. It can be new music, flash backs, a song or a whole album... whatever you like. You can be stitching with needle & thread, yarn, paper crafting, painting, cooking... and beyond. Share what you are making and the tunes that are fueling your creativity. Then come back to my Thursday Make & Listen Along post and leave a link in the comments so we can be inspired right along with you! ~

This week I finally gave in to the pleas of my girl to bake. On condition.

You see she loves sweet treats and baking often means her picking recipe, me checking on what we have and adding needed ingredients to shopping list, remembering to bring said shopping list to the actual store and reading through the recipe.

Once things get started she pops in to do a bit of measuring and mixing, often with little brother somehow joining in the mix.

It all ends with me finishing up, putting away, cleaning up, etc... and the littles returning to eat the yummy goodness that just magically popped out of the oven.

I am not a super big fan of lots of sweet treats in the house. She is a super big fan of pulling out every recipe book we have and marking all of the sweet treats she wants (me) to make. See the tabs in the book below.

Last week I started Lori's Master Class for Project Based Homeschooling (even though we have been project based learning for 5 years now there is still much to master round here) and while journal the other day it hit me... why not see if she wants to take over the majority of the baking as her own project!

Of course that was met with a resounding, "Yes!"

She picked a recipe she has been wanting to make for quite some time, Gluten Free Cinnamon Rolls.

She read through the whole recipe. I helped her figure out what we had and needed, she made a list. I helped her research what baking power was and the difference between single and double acting baking powder, and our specific brand because it did not say on the container. We had discussions about yeast and the difference between rapid rise and the slowpoke kind. She brought her list to the grocery store and gathered ingredients, checking off her boxes as we went.

Then she read again.

She measured the board because the recipe called for the dough to be a specific size rectangle when rolled out.

She measured ingredients, mixed, rolled, sprinkled and rolled some more (the rolling and cutting of the actual rolls was a bit tricky even for this mom but we managed that together.)

She greased the pan.
She placed the rolls in to start their rise.

The recipe called for plastic wrap and being that she is one to follow certain things to the tee I had to let that bit of plastic go for now...

While waiting for the rise there was some clean up to do. She helped put ingredients away and clean off the counters. We are still working on the idea of putting hands in soapy water, so I did the dishes.

She is still a bit nervous around the oven so I put them in to bake... we will work on that.

Then came the glaze.

And a bit more glaze. Clearly a favorite part of the whole endeavor.

With the exception of the actual eating of these yummy treats.

Because of some schedule issues beyond our control we got a much later start than we anticipated so these came out of the oven just in time for dinner.
So of course the most logical thing we could do was have breakfast for dinner. Some chopped fruit and scramble eggs later dinner was served... with cinnamon rolls!

Now she is going to be picking a recipe once a week and going through all that is needed to make it a real live baked good. She is beyond excited about this idea.

There was lots of humming to be heard, because my girl hums when she eats something she really likes.

There has also been the sound of much loved rain & thunder as we are all lovin' the afternoon thunderstorms that have been rolling through.

The radio has been a bit quite as we work lately. A nice peace in the house on these busy summer days.

What have you been making?
What is on your play list?
Please do share.

    1. Thanks Renee!
I spent many years giving them their own bowl of flour and water to mix... While those were fun times too I am happy about this new phase.

  6. So fantastic. Those do look yummy. What was the frosting made from? I've been watching my mother in-law make things lately. She's been making food for 11 people everyday for lunch since we've been here. Incredible. I've been listening when I get a moment to Alex Clare.

  8. I love this so much! I am in the exact same place with my son, and cooking is definitely something we PBH. Mama is learning all kinds of things too. Like sharing the kitchen. And also that little boys wash their hands and dry them under their armpits.
