The Process

When I first learned to sew I told my mom they should call it cutting and ironing... not sewing.

I did not love the process.

Over the years I have gradully learned to appreciate the pre-washing, ironing, measuring, cutting out, pinning... the whole process of getting things ready to sew.

My focus has shifted.
In youth it was about the final product. And I still love that part.
But as I age it is the journey of creating that end result... the richness found in the process.

Even when it means taking a step back. Undoing my way to the product. Only to stitch it up again better, stronger, lasting.

Life lessons with needle and thread... and iron and scissors and pins, and even the stitch ripper.

  1. Sewing has always been an exercise in patience for me... which I need, now and again. The finished product is so satisfying though!!

    1. We do need those exercises in patience. And it is satisfying.. and still faster than knitting. :)

    1. Let me know if you ever figure out the key to housework... The man would be super happy if I solved that issue! :)

  4. You remind me of knitter/writer Ysolda Teague, who preaches the love of swatching for knitters. I've learned to embrace it too.

Your photos are always so beautiful.

  5. I've been able to embrace the process with knitting but not sewing. Maybe one day I'll grow in that direction ;-)
