Make & Listen

Make and Listen Along
~ On Thursdays I will post what we have been making and listening to as creations grow.
If so inclined post, on your blog or flickr, about what you have been making (on your own or with little hands by your side) and listening to while you create. It can be new music, flash backs, a song or a whole album... whatever you like. You can be stitching with needle & thread, yarn, paper crafting, painting, cooking... and beyond. Share what you are making and the tunes that are fueling your creativity. Then come back to my Thursday Make & Listen Along post and leave a link in the comments so we can be inspired right along with you! ~

Yesterday we made room for growth...

With news that Mother's Day is the marker for planting out I realized that we may have started our seeds a bit too soon. While some of the seedlings are getting a bit spindly others are thriving. One thing was for certain; they all needed more room to grow.

With the spring weed growing season beginning in the yard I have suspicions that one area of the yard, covered in thin wood chips, may have been poisoned in the past... as nothing is growing there. That not only makes me sad for the pure thought of lawn and garden poison use but also because that section of the yard played into garden plans in a pretty big way. Now I am making new plans that include scaling back the garden a bit. Hopefully the extra seedlings will turn out to be healthy little plants we can pass on to others.

While this little project progressed we listened to the birds, giggles at rainbows made, and the pitter-patter of bare feet through the water...

At other times this week...

In the kitchen we sang along with these cheery tunes.
While painting I listened to one of my all time favorites.
And while mama got some things done round the house this was in the background. So fascinating!

What have you been making?
What is on your playlist?
Please do share!

  1. We need to start some seeds here! I have made some plans but haven't visited Vessey's yet. Their main office and gardens are very close to us outside Charlottetown. We went last summer, I didn't have my camera with me but it was beautiful. We'll go again this year.
Going to link up later today :)

    1. I just looked up images of Vessey's on google... Yes. You must take your camera. Looks beautiful!
Yay for linking up. Can't wait to see what you have been working on!

  2. All my making has been done in the kitchen. Just cooking dinner. We've listened to so many things lately as V has really taken to music and creating her own tunes. Last night was Puccini and belly dancing music mixed with electronica. Strange but beautiful.

Could you do a raised bed on top of plastic in that area of the garden? I love that the seedlings in the egg shells grew so well.

    1. Fun music mix!
I had thought about a raised bed with protection on the bottom but I am trying to keep expenses down for this season. Thinking I would rather put more $ into building up the soil that is here (in the two rather large brick garden boxes) than expand with the need to bring in a ton of soil/compost! Just going to have to settle for smaller this year. Hard!
They did do well in the egg shells. It is a nice way to get them started and see who is going to germinate, etc... And they look super adorable ;-)

  3. Your eggshells starts did so well. Ours suffered a bit. Hoping to try again for the fall. We did transplant some basil yesterday which was a delight. I truly hate the use of herbicides in yards. It is so very prevalent here. Our new home will have to have boxes until we rehab the soil. Oh, and I love Elizabeth Mitchell - perhaps more than my children. We saw her family in concert last year in Virginia. It was fantastic.

    1. Sorry to hear about your seedlings.
Happy to hear about the basil though... my fav!

I have seen herbicides in use a lot here too... people spraying what little patch of grass they have or just spraying their rock yard!

How fun that your got to see EM in concert. I bet that would be a super fun show!

  4. Dawn! I have been sooo out of the loop for so very long with our own move that I have completely lost touch. I had no clue you made such a big move! Wow. New Mexico is one of my favorite places in the world. I am so thrilled for your new adventure and can't wait to catch up with you here. I hope you're settling in nicely and finding your niche in your new space.

  5. Look at those seedlings! We planted some more seeds today, the last set. Hoping to get some cold weather things right in the garden next week...fingers crossed.

Making this week has also included some water colour, knitting, and a little sewing.

  6. We are totally new to gardening, but we've been learning by doing. Last weekend we did some transplanting and some newplanting. This weekend, I think, we are going to make some raised beds to begin our foray into growing some vegetables. Seeing your starts is encouraging. http://www.thissortaoldlife.com/2013/04/22/6-ways-to-undesign-your-garden/

  7. Here I am! http://amyhoodarts.com/2013/04/25/weeks-work-making-listening/

Do you have any place nearby that will analyze your soil for you? That way you would know exactly what's up. (And maybe it will reduce worries? or at least focus them?!) I think our state university's co-operative extension does that.

I love those seedlings in eggshells! Such a great photo too.

    1. Thanks for playing along Amy!

That is a great idea to have the soil analyzed. This is not going to be a long term yard but I might just do it anyway so I can grow a few more things this season!
      Thanks!
